Setting Sail on a Sweet Adventure

On our Disney Cruise, my husband and I snuck away from the kids for a bit to check out the adults-only section of the ship. It was like finding a peaceful oasis in the midst of the family excitement and bustle. The best part, though? I got my hands on my very first hot chocolate bomb at the ship’s café. Imagine this: a chocolate ball slowly melting in my mug, and as it swirled around, tiny marshmallows popped out like magic. That first sip? Pure cozy happiness. I couldn’t stop smiling, sharing that sweet little moment with my husband right in the middle of our Disney adventure.

After getting back from that amazing Disney Cruise, I knew one thing for sure—I had to try making those hot chocolate bombs myself. I felt like a mad scientist, experimenting in the kitchen, and honestly, it was so much fun. When I finally tried my first homemade hot chocolate bomb, it was the best feeling ever. The family loved it too! It was like bringing a little bit of that Disney magic right into our home.

Annual Tradition: Spreading Hot Chocolate Bomb Magic Year After Year!

This year, making those hot chocolate bombs reached a whole new level of fun, all thanks to my kitchen buddy, the Thermomix! It seriously made life easier, especially when it came to dealing with chocolate. Tempering chocolate used to feel tricky, but the Thermomix handled it like a pro—keeping the temperature spot-on and doing all the stirring for me. With that part taken care of, I got to focus on the fun stuff, like adding the fillings and watching the bombs come together. Now, making these every year feels effortless, and I’m loving it!

We whipped up a bunch of these delightful hot chocolate bombs for our family and friends this year, and boy, did they love it! I made some with rich dark chocolate, others with creamy milk chocolate, and even a few with a refreshing peppermint twist. But you know what’s even more exciting? I can’t wait to experiment with more flavours! Thank you Callebaut chocolate for adding that extra touch of magic to these little flavour-packed bombs!

Hot chocolate bombs are so much fun to make and even better to share! They’re surprisingly easy to put together and make a thoughtful little treat. Whether it’s for a friend, a special occasion, or just to brighten someone’s day, they’re always a sweet idea. It’s like giving someone a warm hug in a cup.

Ingredients:

For the Chocolate Shells:

  • 8 ounces (about 2 cups) high-quality chocolate (dark, milk, or white)

For Filling and Decorating (customize to your liking):

  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Crushed peppermint candies
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Caramel sauce
  • Sprinkles
  • White and Milk Chocolate for drizzle

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

  • Clear a clean and dry workspace, and gather all your ingredients and your Thermomix.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate

  • If not using chocolate chips, chop the chocolate into small, uniform pieces to help it melt evenly – look for the chop chocolate function.
  • Set the Thermomix to melt the chocolate – 4 mins/50°C/speed 2.

Step 3: Create Chocolate Shells

  • Use a silicone semi-sphere mold to create the chocolate shells.
  • Spoon a generous amount of melted chocolate into each cavity.
  • Use the back of a spoon or baking brush to spread the chocolate evenly, making sure to cover the sides and create a hollow cavity.
  • Put the mold in the refrigerator for approximately 5 to 10 minutes to let the chocolate harden. Take it out, apply an additional layer to ensure it’s sturdy enough to be removed without breaking easily. When it’s ready, it should effortlessly pop out of the mold without falling apart. Ensure that the edges are thoroughly coated as they are typically the areas prone to breakage.

Step 4: Fill the Shells

  • Gently take out the chocolate shells from the mold and place them on a clean surface. I often use a cooling rack or the top of a bottle to provide stable support, preventing the chocolate shells from shifting around.
  • Fill half of the shells with your choice of hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint, mini chocolate chips, caramel sauce, or any other fillings you prefer.

Step 5: Seal the Bombs

  • To seal the chocolate bombs, warm a plate in the microwave for a few seconds or heat a small pan on the stove.
  • Place one of the empty chocolate shell halves on the warm plate/pan for a few seconds to gently melt the rim.
  • Quickly but gently place it on top of a filled shell and press lightly to seal. The melted edges should fuse together. Wipe around to clean off any excess chocolate around the rim.

Step 6: Decorate

  • Position the chocolate bombs on a baking rack, making sure there’s a silicone mat underneath (or use a plate). Then, drizzle any remaining melted chocolate over the sealed bombs to add a decorative touch.
  • Add sprinkles, crushed candies, or any other toppings to make them look even more enticing.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

  • To enjoy the hot chocolate bomb, place it in a mug.
  • Pour hot milk over the top, and watch as the bomb melts, releasing the cocoa mix and other fillings.
  • Stir until everything is well combined and enjoy your delicious hot chocolate!
