Beef Pepper Rice

Back in 2011, I was wandering through the busy streets of Hong Kong when I stumbled upon something that would become a new favourite—Sizzling Beef Pepper Rice. One bite, and I was hooked. It had that perfect mix of sweet and savoury that had me craving it every day! No joke! It was something I knew I had to figure out how to make it when I got back home.

The best part is, it’s super easy to recreate at home. Just sauté some onions, add some beef, then toss in rice, corn, green onions, sauce, and butter.

The Rise and Spread of Beef Pepper Rice

Beef Pepper Rice has its roots in Japan, particularly with the Pepper Lunch restaurant chain, thanks to the vision of chef Kunio Ichinose in the early 1990s. The concept took off when the first Pepper Lunch opened its doors in Tokyo in 1994, creating a buzz.

What makes this dish stand out is the fun, interactive twist – you get raw ingredients served on a hotplate and cook your meal right at the table. It adds a personal touch and makes eating way more fun. Pepper Lunch’s success in Japan helped it spread across Asia and beyond, sharing the joy of Beef Pepper Rice with even more people. The combination of tender beef, flavourful sauce, pepper, and that sizzling hotplate makes it a go-to for anyone looking for a tasty meal with a bit of excitement.

A Quick, Easy, and Delicious Go-To Meal

For years now, this dish has been my go-to, especially on those crazy days when time just isn’t on my side. It’s like a rescue mission in the middle of the chaos. The steps are super simple—sauté the onions, toss in the beef on the sides, add the rice in, corn, scallions, sauce, and butter. Within minutes, the flavours come together perfectly, and I’ve got a satisfying meal on the table.

What makes it even more special is the instant approval from my kids. It’s one of their absolute favourites, and getting them to say “no” to it is practically impossible. In just a few minutes, I’ve got a hearty and satisfying meal not just for myself but for the whole family. Even their friend comes over when he knows I’m making it that night LOL. I enjoy using my cast iron pan to make this dish because it gives my rice that extra crispiness.

This dish is a reminder that delicious doesn’t always have to mean complicated. The bonus? The inviting aroma that fills the kitchen during this speedy cooking process—a mini escape from the day’s chaos. So, when time is of the essence, this dish stands as my reliable kitchen ally, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What You’ll Need

  1. Beef slices:
    • The star of the dish! Choose thinly sliced beef for quick cooking and tenderness. My go-to choice is typically beef brisket used for hotpot. It can be found in many Asian supermarkets. It has a thin and tender cut making it quick to cook and easy to bite into. Also, the marbling in brisket adds flavour and juiciness to the dish.
  2. Onions:
    • Sautéed onions add a sweet and savoury flavor to the dish, complementing the beef and enhancing the overall taste.
  3. Cooked Rice:
    • I prefer using freshly cooked rice. The rice soaks up the flavours and adds a satisfying, hearty element.
  4. Bell Peppers:
    • Adds vibrant colours, a sweet crunch, and a hint of freshness to the dish. You can use a mix of colours for visual appeal.
  5. Corn:
    • Sweet corn kernels contribute a burst of sweetness and texture, balancing the savoury flavours of the beef.
  6. Scallions:
    • Chopped scallions provide a mild onion flavour and a pop of colour, adding freshness to the dish.
  7. Soy Sauce:
    • To impart a rich umami flavour to the beef and tie all the ingredients together.
  8. Butter:
    • Adds a creamy richness and enhances the overall flavour profile. It contributes to the sizzling and creates a mouthwatering aroma.
  9. Black Pepper:
    • The key seasoning! Ground black pepper gives the dish its signature peppery kick, adding depth and warmth.
  10. Mirin & Maple Syrup:
    • Mirin is a sweet rice wine that adds a subtle sweetness to the sauce. This sweetness can counteract the saltiness of the soy sauce, creating a more well-rounded and harmonious taste.
    • Maple syrup offers a distinct sweetness with a hint of caramel undertones. This can add a rich and nuanced sweetness to the sauce and can contribute to the thickness and stickiness of the sauce, helping it coat the ingredients more effectively.
  11. Furikake:
    • Sprinkling Furikake over the finished dish introduces a savoury and umami-packed punch, complementing the beef and adding an extra layer of flavour.
  12. Fried Egg:
    • Adding a sunny-side-up fried egg on top enhances the dish with a delightful and delicious touch.

These ingredients work together to make Beef Pepper Rice super tasty and balanced. You can easily adjust the amounts and swap in different veggies or seasonings based on what you like. Feel free to get creative and make it your own!
